US restaurants run on 3 to 6 percent margins. Every 1 percent of processing markup takes a real bite out of net profit.

Our card-present margin is 0.30 percent on Program A, plus the actual card-network interchange and assessments at cost, plus a $5 monthly account fee. No padding. No junk fees. Written in the pricing schedule.

Common patterns

Four cost mechanisms every US restaurant pays for.

  1. 01

    Tip-handling on the blended rate

Under a flat-rate processor's card-present rate, the merchant pays the full processing fee on the tip portion of every ticket, including tips the merchant does not keep under a commission-split or a tip-pool structure. Our card-present margin is 0.30 percent on Program A, plus interchange and assessments at cost. The rate on the tip portion is the same rate as the rest of the ticket. There is no separate tip-handling surcharge.

  2. 02

    Card-not-present takeout and delivery keying

Takeout, phone-in, and third-party order keying route through card-not-present interchange, which prices meaningfully above card-present at the same card. On flat-rate processing, online-order rates sit at 3.3 to 3.5 percent regardless of the underlying card cost. Program A charges 0.40 percent on the Payzium side of card-not-present, plus the actual card-not-present interchange. On a $60 phone-in order the difference across a busy month adds up.

  3. 03

    Regulated debit under Durbin

US regulated debit is capped at roughly 0.05 percent plus $0.22 per transaction on the issuer side under the Durbin Amendment. On a flat-rate processor at 2.6 percent plus $0.15, every card-present debit transaction is charged the credit-card blended rate regardless. On interchange-plus, the regulated debit rate flows through as a pass-through line and Payzium's card-present margin sits on top. Debit-heavy restaurants (counter-service, breakfast concepts) see the largest single line of savings on this slice.

  4. 04

    Statement noise on flat-rate accounts

Standard restaurant merchant agreements accrete junk-fee lines over time: PCI monthly, PCI non-compliance quarterly, statement fee, account maintenance, monthly minimum. Program A has one $5 monthly account fee and no other Payzium-controlled monthly line. The Honest Rate Promise refunds any Payzium fee not on the pricing schedule.
